What is a unit converter?

This free tool converts pixels to the CSS unit REM or Point and vice versa. The conversion is based on the default font-size of 16 pixel, but can be changed trough the input selector.

With the CSS rem unit you can define a size relative to the font-size of the HTML root tag.

The conversion works of course in both directions (Pixel, REM and Point), just change the opposite value in the relative section.

What is a Pixel unit?

A pixel, (or picture element), abbreviated as "px" is a physical point in a raster image, or the smallest addressable element in an all points addressable display device; so it is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen.

Pixels are a unit of measurement commonly used in graphic and web design, equivalent to roughly 1⁄96 inch (0.26 mm).

This measurement is used to make sure a given element will display as the same size no matter what screen resolution views it.

What is a REM?

According to the W3C spec the definition for one rem unit is: "Equal to the computed value of font-size on the root element. When specified on the font-size property of the root element, the rem units refer to the property’s initial value."

This means that 1rem equals the font size of the html element (which for most browsers has a default value of 16px)".

Otherwise, Em units are relative to the font size of their own "father" element. As such they can cascade and cause unexpected results

What is a Point unit?

Points unit, abbreviated as "pt", is euql to 1/72 of an inch or 1/72 of 96px or 1/72 of 2.54cm.

The point on the other hand is a unit of length, commonly used to measure the height of a font, but technically capable of measuring any length.

In applications, 1pt is equal to exactly 1/72th of an inch; in traditional print technically 72pt is 0.996264 inches.
